Smart Routing
Route and block transactions using specific criteria in the BR-DGE Portal.
Smart Routing is fragment-based payment routing. It allows you to design custom routing logic that matches your business needs, for example, to fulfil Anti-Money Laundering (AML) obligations.
Whether you want to route by transaction volume, card issuer, or specific currencies, or block by country or card category, fragments allow you to build the logic your way.
🔍 Introduction to Smart Routing
Smart Routing gives you full control over how your transactions are directed to payment processors. With the right routing strategy, you can:
- Maximise transaction approval rates
- Optimise processing costs
- Stay resilient with processor failover strategies
- Protect your business by instantly blocking specific transactions
Each retail channel has its own Smart Routing Rule Set.
🧩 Fragments
Fragments are the building blocks of BR-DGE routing logic. By combining them in to Rules and Rule sets, you define the when (Input) and the then (Output) of every transaction flow.
There are three types of fragments:
- Input fragments
- Output fragments
- Blocking fragments

📜 Rules & Rule Sets
- Rule: A rule consists of one, or more input fragments (the conditions), and a single output fragment (the action/destination). A rule determines what happens to a transaction when it matches your criteria.
- Rule set: A rule set is the collective name for all the individual rules assigned to a single retail channel. If you log in as an Administrator, Rule sets can be found in the Smart Routing tab of the BR-DGE portal.
