Account Funded Transactions (AFTs)

An AFT is a transaction in which a cardholder's payment instrument is used to load or transfer funds into a non-merchant account.

About AFTs

An Account Funding Transaction (AFT) is a distinct transaction category recognised by Visa and Mastercard in which a cardholder's payment instrument is used to load or transfer funds into a non-merchant account, rather than to purchase goods or services. Common examples of AFT use include:

  • Topping up a digital wallet or prepaid card.
  • Funding a person-to-person (P2P) money transfer.
  • Loading funds into a trading, gaming, or e-money account.

Because AFTs are treated differently from standard card purchases by the card schemes, additional data is required in the payment request so that a transaction can be correctly identified and processed as an AFT. Without this data, a transaction that should be classified as an AFT may instead be submitted as a standard purchase — which can result in incorrect interchange classification, scheme compliance failures, or processing rejections for merchants operating under AFT-eligible or AFT-mandated merchant category codes (MCCs).

BR-DGE enables you to flag a payment as an AFT and provide the additional data needed to have it correctly identified and processed as such.
